Safety on the Yacht

Safety on the boat is priority number one. I like to use a checklist and make sure my gear is in order before getting underway. Here is a list of some of the items that are must haves:

  • Wearable PFDs for everyone onboard, including pets

  • One throwable PFD

  • 3 fire extinguishers (required for vessels 40'–65')

  • Flares and SOS light

  • Working horn

  • Make sure vents are working

  • First aid kit

  • VHF radio: fully charged and programmed with local Coast Guard channels

  • Float plan filed with someone onshore before every departure

  • Fire suppression system in the engine room

  • Working bilge pump

  • Anchor and adequate rode

  • Charts or chartplotter up to date

  • Engine room checked before departure:no fuel leaks, belts in good condition

  • All running lights working

  • EPIRB or PLB registered and current

  • Know your weather before you leave the dock
